About

GEMS (Gender Education in Medicine for Switzerland) is a collaborative project linking medical and nursing higher-education institutions across Switzerland. It was developed through the Sex and Gender integration in the Swiss Medical Curriculum project, supported by swissuniversities under its 2021–2024 P-7 programme. GEMS pools teaching materials and supports a common core curriculum aligned with the federal PROFILES learning objectives. Resources are accessed through SWITCH edu-ID and are intended for educators affiliated with Swiss higher-education institutions, with access also possible by special request. Its relevance to women’s health lies in improving the integration of sex and gender into clinical education rather than providing direct patient care.

Ecosystem need

Sex and gender dimensions need to be integrated into Swiss medical education, but partner institutions have uneven and sometimes limited teaching resources. GEMS addresses this by pooling educational materials, expertise and strategies across institutions.

Support provided

Hosts and shares sex- and gender-related teaching resources, supports development of a common core curriculum, engages faculty, students and institutional leadership, and communicates progress through newsletters, publications and conferences. The project aims to strengthen education and ultimately improve quality of care.
